In modern football, you usually have to shell out several million Euros or Pounds for that impressive player who will boost your squad. Signing a player on a free transfer requires him to be out of contract at his current club, or be in the final year on his contract, which is also known as the Bosman transfer.

9. Raul – Real Madrid to Schalke


After he was not offered a new contract at Real Madrid, legendary striker Raul decided to seek a different challenge in his career, which he found in Germany, playing for Schalke. In short time he spent there, he established himself as a true leader and was even offered a captaincy. Currently, he plays for Qatar side, Al-Saad.

8. Henrik Larsson – Celtic to Barcelona


One of the most prolific strikers in the history of football, Henrik Larsson, made a surprise move to Barcelona, on free from Celtic after 2003/2004 season. In 1999, one of the first sensational free transfers happened in Europe. England and Liverpool winger Steve McManaman switched to Real Madrid on bosman ruling. His time at Bernabeu was very successful, as he became the first and only English player to score in the Champions league final, without the final consisting of English teams.

The decline of the Galacticos started when Esteban Cambiasso was not offered a new contract at Real Madrid and decided to move to Inter Milan in 2004. He still plays for the Italian giants and is labeled as one of the best central midfielders of his generation.
