The unsung heroes of the English Premier League quietly go about their business as their colleagues who perhaps score the goals steal the limelight whilst their hard work goes unnoticed. Although the managers and fellow professionals appreciate and admire all of the hard work the team puts in, some of the spectators just see the goals scored and the saves made and fail to see where the goal really stemmed from. So who are the 9 most underrated players in the Premier League?
The current captain of Crystal Palace was instrumental in Palace surviving relegation last year. Tony Pulis recognised just what a work horse the Australian midfielder was and he became a driving force from the centre of the park. His greatest strengths are his aerial dominance and ability to break up attacks deep into their defensive third.
One of Manchester United’s most talented players is Michael Carrick but many spectators fail to see what a presence he is for United’s midfield. It has why their slow start has been so understandable through his absence through injury. One of the best passers in the Premier League and has the talent to unlock any defence with one pass.
All the credit at Chelsea goes to the attacking flair players such as Eden Hazard, CescFabregas and Diego Costa but the re-signing of NemanjaMatic has proved an inspirational one by Chelsea. The holding midfielder breaks up a lot of play for Chelsea and does the simple task of passing to one of his more technically astute team mates to create the magic.
The Belgian midfielder has dropped back from a more advanced position of recent years which is evident with his powerful runs going forward. Not many midfielders boast the confidence let alone the skill to pick up the ball in midfield and drive at opponents causing them to commit themselves but Dembele is one player who can.
Zabaleta is one of the few full backs of the modern day era who priorities defending before attacking. Although he does do his fair share of attacking from right back, Zabaleta appreciates that his primary focus should be preventing goals at his end. He is an extremely dogged individual who has proved a key player for Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini.
The versatile Arsenal defender has played more often than not this season due to the injuries Arsenal have sustained in defence and people can see why the club paid £16million for the young talent. Has a big future in the game and is likely to become a regular international for England in years to come.
Ward is another underrated player from Crystal Palace and the right back is a prominent part of the Palace line up. He wears his heart on his sleeve and will put 100% commitment into any challenge that is demanded of him. At 25 years old he still has many more years ahead of him and is a consistent Premier League performer.
The Southampton defender has been instrumental this season as Southampton have shipped just 5 goals in 10 Premier League games. Despite numerous stars leaving the club and being brought in over the summer, Jose Fonte’s loyalty to the club has seen him earn promotions from League 1 to the Premier League where he looks at his most comfortable. His performances have also earned him his first call up to the Portugal senior set up at the age of 30.
Adrian has blossomed since taking over #1 goal keeping duties from JussiJaaskelainen at West Ham. At his young age he has a chance to cement himself as the Hammers first choice keeper for the next decade. Adrian’s strong performances have had West Ham pressing for a place in Europe this season.
