The English Premier League has graced some of the best players in the world of football since its launch in 1992. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Eric Cantona have graced us all with their majestic footballing skills. However, for some footballers the EPL is a promised land that they haven’t experienced, which is sure to be one of their biggest career regrets. We’re going for a ride up to 88 miles per hour in Professor Emmett Brown’s DeLorean time machine to bring you the 10 Best Players that never played in the Premier League in a 3-4-2 formation and which Premier League team they would have suited:
Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas
Has spent his entire career at Real Madrid before moving to Porto in 2015/16. The long-time Spanish No.1 was a loyal and brilliant performer for Madrid. The record appearance holder for Spain would’ve been a big hit in the Premier League and his Spanish background would complement the Spanish contingent at Arsenal.
Central Defence: Paolo Maldini
One of football’s most dedicated professionals was the AC Milan defender. He was incredibly brave and intelligent which made him a perfect centre back. He could also operate at left back and was blessed with using both feet. He has very similar characteristics of John Terry so we’ve decided Chelsea would’ve been his EPL side!
Central Defence: Carles Puyol
The wholehearted defender only recently retired from the game but was a massive part of the successful Barcelona side through the 21st century. The bushy haired centre back was a fan favourite and was extremely passionate about his football and would never accept any less than 100%. Given his resemblance to FabrizioColoccini, Newcastle United is the club for him.
Central Defence: Fabio Cannavaro
The 2006 World Cup winner was a magnificent defender despite being relatively small. The Italian defender would’ve been a good fit for the Premier League as he was very strong and quick which are attributes suited towards England. His presence and fearlessness is something present at Old Trafford over the years so Manchester United is his EPL club.
Right Midfield: Luis Figo
Figo was such a talent that Real Madrid signed the Portuguese midfielder from their rivals, Barcelona. The transfer was a world record fee which is evident proof of his talent. He was very skilful and was technically gifted which often enabled him to unlock defences with a penetrating pass. His prowess in the final third would’ve been a hit at Manchester City.
Left Midfield: Ronaldinho
Was probably the closest player out of the 10 to play in the Premier League when Manchester United attempted to sign him from PSG but opted for Barcelona. Always plays with a smile on his face and bamboozled defenders with his trickery. One of Manchester United’s biggest regrets was letting the Brazilian slip through their fingers so we will say United as his club.
Central Midfield: Zinedine Zidane
Arguably one of the greatest players ever to play the beautiful game. The French midfielder was a genius with the ball in midfield and made many assists and goals over the course of his career. Had the ability to pass a ball 60 yards on a plate as well as possessing skill with the ball at his feet. I don’t think any Premier League club deserves to have this man in their side!
Central Midfield: Xavi
Xavi would be able to make the transition from Barcelona to Arsenal instantly. The free flowing football is something that Arsenal deploys but just not with the decisiveness as Barcelona. Xavi is one of the best passers of the game and the Premier League would be lucky to witness his technical abilities.
It was a shame his career was plagued by serious knee injuries but he will go down as one of the best finishers of the game. Was only recently eclipsed as the all-time top goal scorer in World Cup history and was a typical No.9 striker which would’ve been appreciated immensely at Manchester United.
Striker: Lionel Messi
Another Barcelona player that would be a magnificent fit for Arsenal. The silky tika taka football is often finished by this man who is a World Cup win away from being labelled the best ever footballer. Arsenal have endured struggles in the final third of the pitch and the Barca No.10 would no doubt have been able to win Premier League medals almost single handily.
