With the transfer window opening and millions of pounds being spent on the world’s best talent, we thought we’d compile a list of the 10 Worst Premier League Transfers in History.
1. Massimo Taibi – Venezia to Manchester United
Signed as a replacement for the legendary Peter Schmeichel, Massimo Taibi’s antics on the field were far from impressive and he goes down as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most notorious signings ever.
2. Robinho – Real Madrid to Manchester City
The Brazilian was supposed to be the leading light at the Etihad when he joined and be a beacon of light. However, the mazy attacker failed to settle at the helm and was eventually loaned back to his native Brazil last term.
3. Andriy Shevchenko–AC Milan to Chelsea
Signed for a then Premier League record of 50 million pounds, Shevchenckowas expected to take the Premier League by storm after leading AC Milan to Champions League glory and countless Scudettos. Life in England was miserable for the Ukraine’s highest ever goalscorer, failing to make the transition to the fast paced Premier League and rarely troubling opposition keepers.
4. BoskoBalaban – Dynamo Zagreb to Aston Villa
Bosko only played a handful of games at Villa Park, but the most surprising aspect of the entire transfer was the way he departed the helm, where Aston Villa had to cough nearly £1 million just to get rid of him.
5. Marco Boogers – Sparta Rotterdam to West Ham United
After putting pen to paper in a deal at West Ham, Boogers started off his career normally but picked up a red card in his second outing against Manchester United. Not a big shocker, unless you see that the player disappeared after that, only to be found roaming a Dutch caravan park a few days later.
6. Chris Sutton – Blackburn Rovers to Chelsea
Despite showing promise at his previous clubs in the Premier League, Sutton failed to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge and departed the Blues after only netting a single goal in 28 appearances.
7. Ali Dia – Free agent to Southampton
Ali Dia is a legend amongst English football fans. A part-time player at a Conference level side, Dia rang up Graham Souness and claimed that he was a cousin of George Weah and had recently played for Paris Saint-Germain. The Southampton boss not only signed him but also gave him a surprise appearance against Leeds United, which goes down as one of the most shocking moments in the English game.
8. Albert Luque -Deportivo La Coruna to Newcastle United
A rising star in his native Spain, Luque was snapped by the Geordies just as he began to showcase his talents. However, the Spaniard failed to settle at St. James Park and eventually departed to the warmer La Liga, where has surprisingly put in some great performances for Malaga CF.
9. Marcelino – Real Mallorca to Newcastle United
After some excellent displays in Spain, Newcastle took the plunge for Marcelino, but the move never worked out with the player spending most of his time on the treatment table.
10. Juan Sebastian Veron, Lazio to Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson pounced for the midfielder after his starring role in the 2002 World Cup, but Veron never took to English football in the manner he was supposed to and was even shipped off to rivals Chelsea after a torrid spell.
